2016 Color or the Year

January 21, 2016

Every year in December since 2010, Pantone reveals “the color of the year”. This year, Pantone surprised the general public in announcing two colors instead of one, like usual : it’s the Rose Quartz and Serenity Blue duo which has been elected. No one was expecting this audacious combination of colors. The previous colors of the year were more classic and easier to match : marsala in 2015, the radiant orchid, a dark violet in 2014 or a lively green emerald in 2013.
Personally, that’s good news for me as I love pastel colors, in particular the rose quartz. It’s a color I use to wear and I will continue to wear in 2016 for sure (if you want to see or to see again my rose quartz and serenity blue outfits from last summer, it’s here and here).

“Serenity and Rose Quartz union illustrates an inherent balance between a pink warm tone and a fresh and calm blue, reflecting connection and well-being, order and peace as well”, explained Leatrice Eiseman, Director of the Pantone Color Institute. In fashion, I would pair these two colors with neutral colors like white, pale gray in summer or black for winter outfits. The “Elle” magazine advises to combine these two colors with burgundy, khaki, gray or brown, or to mix them with pale green shades, lavender, peach or pale grey for those who likes wearing pastel colors.

The choice of the color of the year at Pantone is far from being a randum choice. The company surveys the trends among the world and the different lines of business. “I make my decision only after having consulted my experts who travel all around the world in New-York City, London, Paris, Milan… We observe the dresses and make-up worn by the stars and the people in the streets, we watch a lot of movies, see a lot of exhibitions. We also visit automobiles show-room and interrogate tourism professionals on the consumers state of mind” (Les Echos website, Leatrice Eiseman quote). This work seems huge but justified as the trade issues are very significant. Indeed, Sephora in North America launches a mascara line with the color of the year, Case Scenario in Monaco renews its I-phone cases in function of it, Photobox updates its photo scrapbooks colors, and so on.

For the historical touch, Pantone was in the beginning a small company based in New-Jersey which was created in 1866. At that time, it was specialized in color charts for the cosmetic industry. It was bought in 1963 by a chemist employed in the company, Lawrence Herbert, for only a few thousans of US dollars. Noticing that no one saw the colors in th same way, he created an amazing tool : a universal color chart he called the Pantone Matching System. Its aim was to help printers, graphists and designers to collaborate. To insure each color reproducibility, he deided to attribute a code and name to each color (in fact, as a chemist, he created a kind of periodic table of colors…). This chart codifies today more than 5000 colors and is used everywhere in the world.

I let you discover the colors of the 2016 year throug a few pictures.

Have a nice end of week, Xxx.
