She began her career in cinema in 1894, working for the Gaumont company run by Léon Gaumont in Paris. She was one of the first to understand the artistic and narrative potential of cinema, and to experiment with different film techniques.
In 1896, Alice Guy made her first film, "La Fée aux Choux", which is also considered one of the first narrative films in cinema history. She went on to make many other films, covering different genres such as drama, comedy, documentary and even special effects.
In 1907, she moved to the United States with her husband Herbert Blaché and co-founded the Solax Company production company in Fort Lee, New Jersey. There she made over 300 films, helping to shape the nascent cinematic language.

Her involvement in the suffragette movement began when she joined the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU), an organization campaigning for women's suffrage. Recognizing the need to protect herself against police violence and opponents during demonstrations, Edith Garrud trained a group of suffragettes known as the "Bodyguard" in self-defense.
